Look Back at BYBR Spring 2015

Posted by on in Bar-B-Que

May 23rd, 2015....round 4 of Backyard Braggen' Rights kicked off with beautiful weather (seems to be some power in prayer...yes God!). Add a breakfast burrito, that I snagged from the Allred smoker, to the beautiful weather and my day was off to a great start! The music system was easily put together and most of the set up had been accomplished the day before so unlike previous years where we ran around in circles, we were actually able to enjoy the beginning of the day and enjoy the calm before the storm AKA lunch hour.

Then the bands began to arrive and the fun began. Thanks to the great bands (Mainstream Blues, Knabels, and Dave Reetz with the Madison school band) no fights broke out over playing time on the stage. To be quite honest I was impressed with how smooth the bands transitioned from one to another. Shout out to Mr. Dave Reetz, Joe Knabel, and Trae Riley who were quick to organize and work around each others schedules to put on the best performance this event has seen!

As the bands played lunch hour unfolded which minus music blaring in people's ears (note to self: do not place speakers directly towards the lunch line) the lunch period went off without a hitch. Thanks to Karie Flood, Sara Jackson, and Polly Nuessle for trading out trays of food, ensuring no one had to go without something because it wasn't available (especially those beans!) Also, thanks to the large attendance this year leftovers were few and far between which means I didn't have to eat pulled pork for weeks afterwards (THANK YOU!).

Then came the oh so stressful turn in times as the judging began...the pressure was on! The wide panel of judges set to work defying all odds from a teeny tiny table to cups spilling over to pens not working...yes Table 1 judges! All this leading up to the end results. As awards were being handed out all over the place, I took my place next to Mitchell, the videographer of the day (my apologies now for cheering loudly and being heard on the footage). As winners continued to walk to the stage, competition got fierce as the results separated father and son (Ron & Ben Allred) and brother-in-law and sister-in-law (Scott & Audrey McSwain). The competition even began beforehand with threats of attempted vandalism against fellow competitors' entries. Thankfully everyone was able to leave the day with no hard feelings...that is till next year.

All in all the day was a huge success with over 200 people in attendance! It was encouraging to see so many familiar faces in attendance in addition to all the new faces! Looking forward to the next event and all that it might bring!
